ENTREPRENEURSHIP. HEALTH. ENVIRONMENT.
I-Drop is empowering entrepreneurs to change the way drinking water is bought and sold and in the process is tackling two of the world's greatest challenges.
I-DROP WATER'S IMPACT
ACCESS TO SAFE DRINKING WATER
THE SOLUTION IS A BUSINESS MODEL THAT REMOVES ANY TRADE-OFF BETWEEN PROFIT AND IMPACT
We install at no cost to shop owners and take care of filter replacements.
Shop owners benefit from no capital outlay to get an I-Drop unit in their shop, which means any shop can afford an I-Drop unit.
I-Drop keeps track of all water sales through the I-Drop unit and splits revenues equally with shop owners.
Given the very low cost of input water, shop owners' revenue from water sales is almost entirely profit.
Shoppers buy safe drinking water at prices that are 75-80% less than the price of bottled water.
Since 2015, we've helped generate tens of thousands of dollars of local economic activity for shop owners and water entrepreneurs.
WATER ACCESS & HEALTH
I-Drop Water is affordable to everyone. A 5-litre refill costs less than a loaf of bread.
We've lowered the price and increased the accessibility of safe drinking water for thousands of people.
Since 2015, we've sold over 450,000 litres of safe, affordable drinking water to shoppers in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Ghana.
Shoppers use re-usable water containers to purchase water from I-Drop units. This means no plastic waste from single-use bottles.
I-Drop units are incredibly energy efficient. Our purification technology wastes no water and the system can run entirely on solar power if needed.
Since 2016, we have helped save over 7,500 kgs of carbon and 1,600 kgs of plastic waste. We have also helped save over 1 million litres of water that would have been wasted using alternative purification technologies.
According to a MacArthur Foundation report titled: The New Plastics Economy - Catalysing Action: "Reusable packaging was a common choice until roughly half a century ago. Since then, single-use, disposable packaging has increasingly become the preferred option. Nowadays, recent innovation, evolving use patterns, and societal acceptance are again positioning reuse models as attractive options for some plastic packaging segments."
I-Drop Water believes that reuse is a vital component to a sustainable plastic economy, together with a commitment to recycling and efficient plastic packaging practices.
When shops do not provide their own re-usable bottles for shoppers to purchase, I-Drop offers affordable options such as re-usable 5-litre bottles and a new, innovative 5-litre re-usable water bag.
"We urgently need to transform global plastic packaging material flows if we are to continue to reap the benefits of this versatile material. This report marks a major milestone, calling out specific actions to capture opportunities for redesign and innovation, reuse, and recycling. It’s now up to us all to get it done." - Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever
